Y1 Curriculum Overview 2026-27
Y1 Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2026

At St Dominic's we believe reading is essential for children's development and supports their knowledge and understanding in all subjects. Enjoying and sharing books, in school and at home, leads to children seeing books as a source of pleasure. We encourage children to have an interest in reading and, through enjoyment, hope to instil a love of reading and so motivating them to value reading.

In Year 1 we are following the Little Wandle Scheme working towards the Phonics screening check in June. This will involve the children using the sounds they have learnt in Phonics lesson to decode and read a range of real and not real/alien words. The work we are doing in our Phonics lessons throughout the year will be preparing the children for the Phonics screening test.

Phonics Play is a great website to learn Phonics in a fun way.

Little Wandle has resources to help support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters.

The Reader Teacher has recommended reading books for year 1.

Topmarks and  ICT Games have a range of age appropriate games for learning.

Your child will have a login for Numbots and Purplemash.
